American Airlines AAdvantage is the frequent flyer program for the world's largest airline. You earn AAdvantage Miles through flights, credit cards, and partners, which you can redeem for award travel and upgrades. Separately, AA tracks Loyalty Points (LP) to determine your elite status tier each year.

The key distinction:

  • AAdvantage Miles = what you spend (award flights, upgrades, partner redemptions)
  • Loyalty Points (LP) = what you accumulate to qualify for elite status

This is where EconoMile becomes practical: it lets you compare fares, estimated Loyalty Points, and estimated Miles side by side, including efficiency metrics like LP per $100 and Miles per $100.

Useful pages:

1) Two Different Metrics: Miles vs. Loyalty Points

AAdvantage Miles (Redeemable)

Miles are the spendable currency in the AAdvantage program. Typical uses:

  • Award flights (domestic and international)
  • Upgrades (on eligible fares)
  • Partner redemptions through oneworld and other partners

Loyalty Points (LP)

Loyalty Points determine your AAdvantage elite status. The qualification period runs from March 1 through the end of February each year. Every eligible AAdvantage Mile earned counts as 1 Loyalty Point.

Important: As of December 17, 2025, Basic Economy fares on American Airlines no longer earn Loyalty Points.

Status Tiers

Tier Required LP oneworld Status Key Benefits
Gold 40,000 Ruby 24-hour complimentary upgrades, priority boarding
Platinum 75,000 Sapphire Admirals Club access (day pass), preferred seats
Platinum Pro 125,000 Emerald 72-hour complimentary upgrades, oneworld lounge access
Executive Platinum 200,000 Emerald 100-hour upgrades, systemwide upgrades, Flagship lounge

Requirements have been frozen at these levels for 3 consecutive years.

Lifetime Status

Lifetime Tier Required Lifetime Miles
Gold 1,000,000
Platinum 2,000,000
Platinum Pro 4,000,000
Executive Platinum 5,000,000

2) How Loyalty Points Are Calculated

LP earning depends on who operates the flight:

AA-Operated Flights (Price-Based)

For flights operated by American Airlines, earning is based on fare price:

Loyalty Points = Fare (USD) x 5

Status holders earn bonus LP on top:

Status Multiplier Effective Rate
No Status 5x base 5 LP per $1
Gold 5x + 40% bonus 7 LP per $1
Platinum 5x + 60% bonus 8 LP per $1
Platinum Pro 5x + 80% bonus 9 LP per $1
Executive Platinum 5x + 120% bonus 11 LP per $1

Partner Flights (Distance-Based)

For flights operated by oneworld partners like JAL or Alaska Airlines, earning is distance-based with rates varying by booking class:

Loyalty Points = Distance x Booking Class Rate

For example, on JAL-operated international flights:

Cabin Booking Class Rate
First F, A 300%
Business J, C, D, I 250%
Premium Economy W, R 150%
Economy Y, B 100%
Economy H, K, M 70%
Economy L, V, S 50%

BA/Iberia flights are also price-based (5 LP per $1 USD of fare).

3) Why EconoMile is Useful for AAdvantage Planning

AAdvantage planning gets complicated because:

  • AA flights are price-based while partner flights are distance-based
  • The same route can have vastly different LP depending on the operating airline and booking class
  • Comparing efficiency across airlines and cabins requires side-by-side data

EconoMile helps by showing:

  • Estimated fare ranges
  • Estimated Loyalty Points and Miles
  • Efficiency metrics like LP / $100 and Miles / $100
  • Cross-airline comparisons within the oneworld alliance (AA, JAL, BA, Alaska)
  • Cross-cabin comparisons (Economy / Premium Economy / Business / First)

4) How to Use the Destinations Page (LAX Roundtrip)

Page: https://econo-mile.com/en/aa/lax/roundtrip

Destinations overview page

This page is designed for quick screening. For each destination, you can compare:

  • Price
  • AA: estimated Loyalty Points and LP / $100
  • AA: estimated Miles and Miles / $100
  • (Where available) metrics from other crediting programs

A practical workflow:

  1. Start with LP / $100 if your goal is status
  2. Cross-check with price and travel practicality (duration, connections)
  3. If your goal is redeemable miles, focus on Miles / $100

In the right-side panel, you can:

  • Toggle one-way / roundtrip
  • Change origin/destination
  • Filter airlines
  • Select the crediting program (AA / JAL / BA, where supported)

5) How to Read a Route Detail Page (Example: LAX to Tokyo)

Page: https://econo-mile.com/en/aa/lax/roundtrip/tyo

Route detail page

5.1 Route Summary at Top

You'll see a route-level range summary:

  • Fare range
  • Estimated LP and LP efficiency
  • Estimated Miles and Miles efficiency

This gives you an instant sense of how the economics change across ticket types and cabins.

5.2 Cabin Cards (Economy / Premium Economy / Business / First)

Each cabin card summarizes:

  • Fare range
  • Estimated LP and LP efficiency per $100
  • Estimated Miles and Miles efficiency per $100

6) Flight List: Operating Airline Matters

Flight list

The flight list breaks down the route into ticket groups and shows for each:

  • Fare (or fare range)
  • Estimated Loyalty Points
  • Estimated Miles
  • Efficiency metrics (per $100)

For AA-operated flights, LP is calculated from the fare price (fare x 5). For partner-operated flights (JAL, Alaska, etc.), LP is calculated from distance and booking class. This means two tickets at similar prices can earn very differently depending on who operates the flight.

7) Expand for Calculation Breakdown

Calculation breakdown

Expanding a flight shows the estimated formula components. Examples:

AA-operated (price-based):

  • $800 x 5 = 4,000 Loyalty Points

JAL-operated (distance-based), LAX to Tokyo:

  • LAX -> NRT (class J): 5,451 mi x 250% = 13,627 Loyalty Points
  • NRT -> LAX (class D): 5,451 mi x 250% = 13,627 Loyalty Points
  • Total: 27,254 Loyalty Points

The breakdown makes it clear why partner flights in premium cabins can earn dramatically more LP than AA-operated economy flights, even at similar or lower fares.

8) Recommended EconoMile Usage (Goal-Based)

If Your Goal is AAdvantage Status (LP)

  1. Compare options by LP / $100 on the destinations page
  2. Look at both AA-operated and partner-operated flights for each route
  3. Premium cabin partner flights (especially JAL Business/First) can offer exceptional LP efficiency
  4. Remember that Basic Economy on AA no longer earns LP

If Your Goal is Redeemable Miles

  1. Compare by Miles / $100
  2. AA-operated flights earn 5 Miles per $1 regardless of cabin
  3. Partner flights earn distance-based miles that can be higher in premium cabins
  4. Consider whether to credit to AA or to a partner program (JAL, BA) for the same flight

If Your Goal is Executive Platinum

  • Target 200,000 LP within the March-February qualification window
  • At base rates, this requires $40,000 in AA fare spending (or less with status bonuses)
  • Partner flights in premium cabins can accelerate LP accumulation significantly
  • Use EconoMile to identify the most efficient routes across all oneworld carriers
